Binocular Vision Testing & Prism
Prismatic correction of diplopia (double vision)
Binocular Vision Testing for adults
At Eye C Optometry we have a special interest in the examination of binocular vision in adults and the treatment of double vision (diplopia) with prism.
What is double vision (diplopia)?
Double vision, or diplopia, is when a person sees two images instead of one – these may be overlapping or separated. The doubling may occur horizontally, vertically or obliquely (diagonally) depending on the cause. It is possible for double vision to occur due to the two eyes not working together correctly or due to a problem with just one eye.
What causes diplopia (double vision)?
Double vision that presents suddenly requires urgent assessment. There are serious causes that need to be ruled out, including stroke, autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease and tumors. Milder double vision (ghosting) can be cause by things such as dry eye, cataract or keratoconus.
How is double vision treated?
Short term diplopia is best treated by addressing the cause of the problem.
Long term diplopia, where the double vision is constant (such as double vision that results from a stroke or aneurysm), may be able to be treated with something known as prism. Prism is incorporated into the glasses prescription to assist in realigning the eyes and either reducing the amount of double vision or removing it. At Eye C Optometry we have experience in managing binocular vision problems with prism and are here to help. Prism can be incorporated into most glasses frames to keep you looking good while correcting this often frustrating and difficult condition.
